My Rhino Project, ceramic by John Wiffen from South Africa (Limited Edition).
The sale of these beautiful ceramic rhinos is designed to raise awareness of the plight of the rhino who are needlessly butchered for their horns in alarming numbers each year. In addition, a portion of each sale goes to fund the Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative of the Wilderness Foundation, as well as the Rhino Project of the Endangered Wildlife Trust.
Since 2006, there have been over 1000 rhinos lost to poaching in South Africa alone. In 2008, the number shot up to 83 from 13 in 2007. By 2010, the figure soared to 333, followed by 448 recorded poaches in 2011. In 2012, the numbers continued to escalate with another 339 rhinos lost by August. Over 90% of surviving rhinos are now in South Africa, as the populations elsewhere in Africa and Asia have been decimated.
